How To Increase Blog Views Using Instagram

Happy Tuesday! Today I thought I’d do a little one-off ‘tip tuesday’ post for you bloggers out there.

Now, it’s no great surprise that I am a total instagram addict (if you haven’t noticed then you clearly don’t follow me – you know what to do after you read this post). I find that the majority of my blog traffic comes from instagram and twitter – so today I’m going to give you my tips on how to increase blog views using instagram.

I think it’s hard to know just how many views you get from Instagram because it doesn’t show as a referrer on your statistics – but with so many people using the app there must be somebody out there wanting to see product reviews and outfit posts. Here are my lil tips:

Put your blog URL in your bio

Self explanatory, but if you state you’re a blogger and put your website in your bio then everyone will know what you do at first glance.

Post on Instagram whenever you upload a new blog post

Also self explanatory. If you upload photos from your blog post (or similar ones) and say you have a new post that has just gone live, people may see it and click on the blog link in your bio. I know it’s an obvious one, but bear with me.

Use relevant hashtags

Hashtags are so much better on instagram now than they used to be. Don’t be afraid to add a few hashtags that are relevant to your photo about your blog post. Is it a beauty product? Use #bbloggers and then hashtag all the brands that you’re talking about. Use more refined hashtags instead of #love, aint nobody gonna notice your photo out of 765 million others.

Post frequently

Some people get a bit embarrassed about posting often on instagram in case they’re being ‘annoying’ etc. and I TOTALLY get it. I used to feel the same, like there’s nothing worse than thinking all of your followers are saying ‘oh not that weird girl again’ behind your back. But honestly? Tell them where to stick it! If you wanna post more than 1 photo a day then do it. Blogger babes like Sarah Ashcroft and Yasmine Chanel post like 3 times a day and everyone loves them! Obviously, the more instagram posts you put up, the higher amount of people that will click on your profile and potentially have a browse of your blog.

Like like like like like LOTS of photos

Go down the weird page with no name (like the second page in? next to the homepage?!) – and get liking! Instead of just admiring them you may as well give them a like. You never know who may come over to your instagram page!

Engage with other bloggers

Bloggers definitely stick together on instagram – if you’ve made some blogging friends on twitter maybe follow each other on instagram too. If you follow a blogger and she follows you back, like all her photos, and she’ll probably like all yours back (I mean like every new photo they put up, don’t worry about liking all the 458 photos they’ve previously put up). What you don’t realise is that you’re creating a mini instagram friendship. Before you know it you’ll be commenting on each others photos, then you’ll be avid readers of each others blogs and you’ll basically be BFF’s forever.

Which comes onto my next point… Comment the hell out of photos!

Instead of just going through your instagram homepage and liking the odd photo – leave a comment! As with the previous point, if you engage with other people and grab their attention they’re so much more likely to read your blog. If people realise you’re one of those friendly bloggers who leaves comments and seems like a really sweet bundle of love then they’re totally gonna check out your blog.

Take your blog to instagram, don’t wait for it to come to you

This is the fun bit. If you wait all day for people to find your instagram then it isn’t just going to ‘happen’. One really effective thing I like to do is commenting on brands instagram posts. So, for example… Say I reviewed a Maybelline product on my blog – I’d publish my blog post, upload a photo to instagram, add tons of hashtags, then I’d head over to Maybelline’s instagram page, click on their latest photo and comment something along the lines of ‘I’ve just uploaded a blog post about Maybelline’s *insert product here* blah blah blah blah’ – get the idea?

People will follow Maybelline (and every other clothes/beauty brand) because they like their stuff – so if they’re scrolling down their homepage and see that comment they might be like ‘OOOH I WANTED TO TRY THAT, LET ME READ THAT REVIEW’. I do this all the time with clothes brands and it’s SO effective. Thank me later.

Get conversations going

By this I mean either on your own photos or on other peoples. Maybe ask a question when you post your blog photo – something like ‘have any of you used this product?’ or potentially something a little less dull. On the other hand, if you want to know something about someone elses blog post – comment them a question and get a little convo going! It’s all about engaging with other people and making you stand out from other people that they follow. Be that cool blogger that we all know you are.

Reply to all of your comments

Now, sometimes you don’t get any comments and that’s fine. Don’t freak out if you don’t get any cause even big bloggers sometimes don’t. But if you do – answer their questions, thank them for a nice comment or just do something that will make them notice you again. They may not have read the blog post you instagrammed about the first time because they were too busy at the time, but they may if you reply to their comment!

Have a theme (ish)

You see a lot of people on instagram have a theme, and it’s not the most important thing ever but it can occasionally make your instagram a tiny bit more eye-catching to someone who is clicking on it for the first time. By a theme I kinda mean keep your photos a similar exposure/contrast and either use borders or don’t (not occasionally – that looks weird).

Some of these points are a little obvious but I’ve had so many people ask me about how to increase instagram followers and how to get people to engage in your blog through instagram. Remember you won’t gain 1000 followers and 500 daily views after a day (btw to clarify I DON’T get that) but hopefully you’ll see a mini boom in your stats!

Also this is what I do so don’t come and shoot me down if it doesn’t work for you, please and thank you *sassy emoji*.

You can follow me on instagram at www.instagram.com/phasesofrobyn! (p.s. I’m trying to reach 10k by the end of the year, just thought I’d slip that in there).

Let me know if any of these tips help you and comment any more you may have <3

Until next time,

R x

Ok I just realized that I don’t follow you on IG anymore? What? When did that happen??? Anyway, love your tips. That’s exactly what I do and I feel like it really works. But also, who cares if it doesn’t – IG is my most loved and used social media app so I couldn’t care less about “having to post” on there 😀

And thanks a lot! Definiely though – people shouldn’t care about how many times you post/don’t post or whatever, just do what you want…

Thanks Jessie! Yeah it’s hard sometimes cause nobody exactly has the time to sit through and like tons of pictures and comment all the time but if I get a spare half hour when I’m watching tv it’s what I try and do!

What a lovely post! All the tips are really good, I use half of them but I find myself lazy to leave a bunch of comments. I’m so bad at that xP

    Much love xx

Thank you Andrea! That’s the only issue isn’t it – who has the time to do all that commenting/liking?! I know I don’t, but if I get a spare bit of time then that’s what I try and do!

This is a really helpful post. I get quite nervous with promoting my blog because – like you said – I don’t want to be seen an annoying. It’s definitely a great avenue to spread the word of your blog though! Brilliant tips!

Thanks Emily! I know exactly what you mean, I was the same! I ended up kinda trying not to care what people thought though and just doing it anyway!

Maybe you should consider creating a seperate instagram for your blog? Then you can just follow bloggers and do all your advertising on there? 🙂

I love the idea of commenting on the brand’s instagram page when you write a post about them. I’d never thought of that one before!

I think I’m the only blogger without an instagram for my blog! But I can totally see how it can have such a huge effect on your blog views! I think liking posts is so important, gets your name out there and a theme is always a winner!

    • 7th October 2015 / 6:17 pm

I don’t have a seperate blog instagram, like I only have one, but I use it completely for blog stuff haha. Liking and commenting is great for getting your name around! I’d deffo recommend starting a blog instagram, or just doing some sort of advertising using Instagram whether its your normal account or a new blog one!

I think the bottom line is with Instagram, Twitter etc.. is you’ve gotta be communicating with other people to get new likes and followers – it is called ‘social’ media! This was such a useful post as well, I’d never actually thought about commenting on brands Instagram photos about my blog posts beifre either, I definitely will have to give that a try!
