We’ve all read that Girl Boss book by Sophie Amoruso (if you haven’t, it’s a great little read) and even though I don’t really intend on starting up my own clothing business (spoiler alert?) I did take quite a lot from it, and that includes the idea that I should be my own girl boss. It’s not even a message from the book, per se, but I love the idea of being the boss of one thing, and that’s me. I’m the only one who can control what I do, who I am, and what I work towards, and that means I’m the one who’s in control of how I feel everyday.
One thing my manager told me once was ‘you are the only person who controls what emotions you bring into the office’. Even though we can feel pain because our shoes rubbed on the way to work, or we can feel sad because we watched Love Rosie last night and we’re still not over it – we can also choose to feel empowered and happy, and most of all, be ready to nail the day, girl boss style.
It takes a little bit of time to really get into the zone, but I’m here with my Girl Boss Checklist. In other words, all you need to get the most out of your work day.
THE GIRL BOSS ATTITUDE
This relates a little bit to what I mentioned earlier about ‘choosing your feelings’. Go into your day with the right mindset. If you’ve had a bad morning, think about whether it needs to impact your day or not. Were you 5 minutes late to work? Maybe, but is it really enough of a reason for your whole day to suck? Not really. Choose the way your mind thinks and bring in all of those positive vibes, along with the idea that you’re gonna have a bloody good day.
THE GIRL BOSS EQUIPMENT
Have everything you need to nail the day. I’m talking fully charged phones and laptops, glasses, a watch, and of course some powder to get rid of your mid-afternoon grease (just me?). Along with this smart but feminine outfit, I’ve got everything I need in one place with my Model KT bag from Jennifer Hamley. It fits my laptop, laptop cables, diary, purse, pens and glasses case in it with room to spare – and with easy access to everything I need (including no tangled headphones for the journey home) I don’t need to worry about losing anything. Don’t forget a snazzy watch either, stay on time babes!
THE GIRL BOSS SLEEP
Are you getting your 8 hours? I’ve started turning off my phone about 20/30 mins before I need to sleep so my eyes can have a little down-time, and it’s really helped with my wandering mind before bed. A lot of people say to not look at a screen for an hour or two before bed, but that’s SO impossible, isn’t it? Just a little time away still makes a difference, and it makes sure you wake up feeling fresh.
THE GIRL BOSS LIST
If you write everything down, you’re never going to forget it. Lists lists lists. Buy yourself a quirky notepad and keep everything you need to do written down, and check them off when you can. It’s ok to add small things you’ve done as you’re going too so it makes it look like we’ve done more, we all do it!
THE GIRL BOSS TRIAL AND ERROR
Something doesn’t work out? Try again. Don’t be too disheartened by failure, and learn from it. Referring back to earlier again, you can choose whether to feel disappointed or feel like you’ve learned something. Don’t be afraid to ask for help, we all have to sometimes!
