Trench Coats: The Transitional Staple

You know you live in Britain when one minute it feels like -20 degrees and then an hour later it feels like 45. But you know what that means… Hey hey Spring! Whether it’s officially Spring or not, it’s coming to that transitional period where we need our outfits to be warm enough for cold days but cool enough for those sunny afternoons.

The essential wardrobe item for this transitional time is 100% the trench coat (also known as a mac, but I have no idea what the difference is). I’ve got the perfect trench coat from Joy along with a chic outfit which nails the colours and layering for this ‘awkward’ weather period.

Would you believe I’ve never owned a trench coat? I love those neutral/beige coloured ones that have that Mulberry vibe but I have to say I much prefer the khaki and black ones. We all need a coat/jacket that is lightweight enough to not be irritating, but warm enough for when Storm Doris and her mates give us a day of freezing cold gales, and a trench coat totally ticks all the boxes (though, you may want to add a scarf and hat to your outfit on the stormy days!).

For some reason I also feel like these coats give me a real girl boss vibe – this is the kinda jacket I’d wear with some tapered trousers and a pair of court heels to the office, don’t ya think? I’ve not worn the jacket yet (so I could take pretty pics of it first without creased arse prints) but now I can finally swish around at work with it!

So I’ve gone for a classic black and khaki look (you know me, I love a neutral palette) but I’ve got a pop of red from this GORGEOUS Joy embroidered skirt. Isn’t it the most beautiful thing you’ve ever seen?! Also, plus points, it actually covers my bum enough for it to be work appropriate, because we all know how hard that is to find nowadays.

I’ve never really thought to match khaki with red, black and white but ohhh my WORD I love it so much, obviously along with a snazzy red lip. You can’t see in these photos (worst blogger ever) but this top also has bell sleeves which totally nails the big sleeve trend of 2017. So let’s just say that Joy are totally nailing their clothing at the mo.

I finished this outfit off with some tights, because it’s FAR too cold to let them go yet, along with a pair of ankle boots – but fast forward a month and I’ll wear this exact outfit without tights and with a pair of flat black pumps.

Top – c/o Joy

Bag – c/o Joy

Shoes – Old (but VERY similar here!)

Tights – New Look (my fave ever tights)

Do you love these trench/mac style coats? I’d love to know your thoughts as always, and make sure you check out Joy for all the on-trend (but practical) Spring goodness!

I love the idea of a beige one but I’m so pale that I worry it’ll wash me out totally!

I don’t ever think a trench coat would suit me but I adore the way you’ve complimented it with that embroidered skirt, I’m such a fan!
