Navy OBSESSED: It Isn’t Just For Winter

I’ve successfully accomplished banishing black from my wardrobe this summer – there, I’ve said it! After about 1,000 blog posts mentioning ‘look at me not wearing as much black’, I think I’ve finally got to a point where my wardrobe is a mixture of colours and not just a gothic version of Robyn circa 2006. Especially now I’ve moved out and binned a load of my black gear. And what have I found my main replacement to be? NAVY!

Navy is such an underrated colour, and when I saw this skirt online at Esprit I thought it would be that perfect transitional item for cooler summer days (like we’re having, pee off rain) and for wearing with jumpers in the Autumn.

Did I just say Autumn?! Is it too early? I’M NOT READY. Back to Summer for a sec.

I think the good thing about navy is that it goes with all skin colours and all hair colours. I particularly love the blonde in my hair with the blue, but even when I was brunette I had a thing for a white tee/navy bottoms look. Maybe it’s ’cause I dig that whole nautical vibe because I want to go on a boat and sail away on holiday for 6 months, who knows, but any colour that is easy to style and match other items with is a winner for me.

If you’re not sure how to go about styling navy, or even buying into it, definitely start with the bottoms. A good navy skirt or pair of trousers paired with a simple tee is a classic outfit to try out (especially for an easy work outfit!). Plus it never hurts to get a navy pair of shoes to go with them either…

As I mentioned earlier I nabbed this gorgeous skirt from Esprit, and I loved how big and bold it was. I often go for ditsy skirts with florals and find I can only wear simple t-shirts with them, but with an item like this you can finally dig out those patterned tops. It’s also nice to wear a longer length skirt sometimes when you want to be covered up a little more and want a bit of a ladylike vibe (yes, me, ladylike).

When it came to styling I went for a gingham, all-navy look to show my true love for the colour, with pops of tan throughout. A good colour combo will always be dark blue and that orangey/tan colour – especially at this time of year if you’ve got a bit of a sun-tan to show off. *adds layer of fake tan as she types*

The navy and white gingham top is a beaut from M&S, and it’s an absolute winner with either a skirt or a pair of tapered trousers for the office. The navy doesn’t stop there either, my old Armani bag from last summer has made an appearance for the first time in forever and ohhhh how I’ve missed it. I let my mum keep hold of it when I moved out last week and I think I’m missing it more than my cats…

What are your thoughts on navy? A good replacement for black, or a little old fashioned? I’m all aboard the navy train (ok I’m saying navy too much) and I’m definitely on the lookout for a navy jumper for next season to wear with white trousers. Brave, or FAB?! Either way, it’s not just a colour for Winter!

Let me know what you think in the comments, as always!

I love navy – tried on some white and navy trousers in Wallis this morning and I was really sad they didn’t fit properly! The top you’re wearing is lovely. I often struggle to find things I like in M&S but sometimes they do some lovely things x

Ahhh what a shame! They sound perfect! The top is so lush, I find some real bargains in M&S including some black mules that I got for £19.50 with a special comfort sole – SO good!!

Haha, doesn’t work for everyone! I love my black clothes too but find navy is less harsh on my skin and navy makes me look a little more tanned (even though I’m not)

I don’t own nearly enough navy I must say – I love the colour and see lots of things I like in it but I’m always a bit worried about styling it! You look amazing in this skirt and I love the gingham xxx

Ahhh give it a go! As I said in the post try with some bottoms, especially some navy bottoms if you have smart-wear at work? And don’t be afraid to match it with black!
