One thing you should invest in every year is a statement coat. As soon as you hear the words ‘statement coat’ you probably think I don’t have £200 spare for a posh coat, but to be honest the high street have some seriously good options for under £80 at the moment – and considering it’s one of those items you’ll wear often for 5-6 months it’s worth the investment.
It’s easy to buy a simple black collared coat, knowing it’ll go with everything and knowing it probably will be a few £ less than other coats, but is it going to give you that oomph when you leave the house on those cold mornings? I love putting on a slightly jazzier coat (or something slightly different) that brightens up those dark days!
As soon as I saw this check coat online at Next I had to have it (especially after seeing it styled in the windows at my local store). It contains all of those Autumnal colours as well as that gingham/check style pattern that seems to be all the rage at the moment. It’s a super warm coat and looks lush whether it’s done up or left open, but I’m one of those gals who likes to keep a coat open
and freeze to death so everyone can see my full outfit.
When I showed this to my mum she loved the coat, but she gave the classic response of ‘what the hell are you going to wear with it?’. Sure with coloured coats you are limited to some colours, but for example with this coat I’d wear burgundy (perhaps burgundy trousers), cream, mustard, navy, dark green, any beige colours, and of course black and white. The key just isn’t to overdo it with bright colours if you’re wearing something with subtle colour already in it.
In this look I went for a classic weekend-casual outfit for a shopping/lunch day in a white t-shirt and a denim skirt. Many girls seem to hate the idea of wearing tights, but I’m wearing them at least 2 times a week to work and I love them with denim skirts at the weekend! I get SO fed up of tight trousers and jeans!
When it gets a bit cooler I’ll opt for super thick tights and maybe a creamy cable knit jumper, but for now I was warm enough with a plain tee – anyone else think it was weirdly warm at the weekend?!
Last of all I’m wearing my favourite new ankle boots, also from Next, which I’m wearing to death with skirts, work trousers and jeans. They’re real leather but they didn’t take any time to wear into at all! Plus, the wooden heel totally matches the Autumnal coat colours…

What do we think of the coat?! Isn’t it the DREAMIEST?! I’m so in love and can’t wait to wear it for the whole A/W season! I’d love to know what you think of the outfit in the comments as always!
