Transitional Workwear Buying Tips

Anyone else totally gutted that the heatwave has gone? I am getting much better sleep to be honest and it is nice to cosy up in blankets… oh what the heck, give me autumn already.

The one thing I do like about summer and the heat is the fashion – little skirts, cutesy dresses and sandals, I’m obsessed. However it’s getting to the time where we need to look at our wardrobes and take each new piece we buy with the idea that we can wear it into the autumn and winter period. Savvy shopping at it’s best!

When it comes to workwear I’m all about those versatile pieces for all seasons. During summer the air con always makes it freezing in the office still anyway, so it’s like winter all year round (anyone else!?). But still, it’s all about layering and colour co-ordinating in my opinion, I’m so excited for it!

Recently I spotted this gorgeous Warehouse jumpsuit and it was ideal for summer outfits with sandals and bright accessories, like I’ve worn here, but I knew exactly how to style when it comes to winter too. I know I’ve got some current pieces in my wardrobe which will look fab with it, especially my red cropped trench coat!

I thought I’d give you some of my top tips for transitional buying and how to avoid splurging on items you won’t wear – as well as a few styling tips!

WILL IT LOOK GOOD WITH BOOTS?

When autumn starts we finally say hello to boot season (THE BEST SEASON). When looking at work trousers, or any bottoms to be honest, try them on and see how they’ll look with some boots. I really struggle when it comes to work trousers and boots, so I often go for a low ankle boot (as in, the top of the boot isn’t very high) and I stick to tapered styles that go in at the ankle – otherwise everything looks baggy and you have that do-you-tuck-in-or-leave-out issue.

WILL YOUR ITEM LAYER WELL

Buying a nice dress? How will it look with ankle boots, tights and a jacket? Can you pair it with a cardigan, or will the sleeves not go right with a jacket (*hate it when you get puffy sleeved items and they bulk out your jacket sleeves). Autumn especially is all about layering those items together from summer.

WHAT’S ALREADY IN YOUR WARDROBE?

If you’re contemplating a new purchase, can you remember what’s in your winter wardrobe from last year? Will you have good shoes to match, or a jacket? It’s the time to start flicking back through your wardrobe to last years goodies!

CHECK THE SALES

Because it’s summer, some of last winters clothes are still in the sale! If you’ve got ideas for your capsule autumn/winter wardrobe then dig into the sales while it’s still ‘summer’. I saw a LUSH trench coat in Debenhams recently which was over £100 reduced to £15 (not my size or I’d’ve nabbed!).

WILL YOU WEAR THIS?

Are you going to wear this item, or will it rot away until next summer? If it’s a good sale bargain then go for it, but if it’s not layer-able and doesn’t look right with your other workwear pieces, don’t buy it! After all, you’ve probably spent enough on summer pieces, right?

AUTUMN AND WINTER DOESN’T MEAN BUY BLACK

I get sucked into the monochrome phase when it comes to the new colder season, but don’t be fooled! I’ve really vamped up my wardrobe this summer with some colour and I’m excited to keep it going throughout autumn and winter. Try some coloured blazers and trousers to excite your closet (these trousers are a NEED this season!).

I love Warehouse clothes and this jumpsuit is lovely. It’s been lovely to have nice weather but I did get a little fed up of constantly being too hot! x

They’re always such amazing quality aren’t they! The weather we’re having right now is perfect, not too hot or cold!

HAHA yes it is!! I’m always thinking about how items can be worn with jackets and boots because it’s all we have most of the year!

I love the jumpsuit, it’s gorgeous!

I really struggle pairing trousers with ankle boots so I tend to wear a lot more dresses in the autumn/winter, as they go with tights and boots a lot more xx

Yeah I’m the same! The trousers have to be a certain style or length for it to work for me, I do usually end up wearing more skirts!

You made a great point when you mentioned that one should consider what is already in their closet, and how if it will match the piece of workwear they want to purchase. My clothes are all rather old and outdated, so I’ve been looking to get some knew ones. Thank you so much for all the tips on how to buy transitional workwear.
