The Staple Black Trench Coat

Anybody else missed coat season?!

So we’re not quite in full coat weather, but it’s definitely cool enough to need a light layer with our outfits. My favourite kind of jacket will always be a tough match between a denim jacket and a trench coat, and recently I was on the hunt for a plain black trench coat that I knew could give me years of wear.

To be honest, you wouldn’t think it would be that hard to get a black trench coat, would you? But I was looking for good quality without being one million pounds. A contender was this ASOS coat, but for £55 I didn’t quite want to make the plunge. Another one I found was this one from H&M, but I tried it on in store and really didn’t like the fit.

Eventually, on a shopping trip to buy Jimmy some jeans… I came across this beauty in Debenhams for £36 – it’s RRP is £45, but there was a 20% off sale on the day! It was love at first sight and I knew it was the one I was looking for. The coat itself is lightweight but warm, and completely waterproof, along with being that perfect not-too-short/not-too-long length. I literally LOVE it.

The thing is with trench coats is that they sit so effortlessly with any outfit. Whether you want it to add as a layer to your daily workwear, or wear over a dress on a night out, it will always look amazing! I have a red cropped trench coat (from M&S) which I get loads of wear out of during this kind of weather, and I’m in desperate need of a beige one!

This outfit is all about classic autumn casual. I spend a lot of time in structured trousers and heels for work, and it’s so nice to wear jeans and sandals on the weekend. My current favourite colour is orange/red so this wrap top from New Look went straight into my basket when I saw it, and it looks so good with a pair of blue jeans.

My favourite Topshop bag has had a lot of use this summer, but the colour goes SO perfectly with my new top that I had to wear it. If you want to see more of it, I featured it in a tailoring and tortoiseshell post recently!

Finally, although we’re heading into autumn, my toes are still in sandal mode and I’ve gone for comfort first in this outfit with these Teva sandals. I’ve had these for over a month and they’ve come in such good use when I want to walk a long distance, or for driving. The sandals themselves are real leather and waterproof so ideal for potential damp autumn mornings! They’re also in the sale now too…

That trench coat is practically perfect. It doesn’t break the bank, the colour will go with everything, and it’s the perfect length! This definitely beats the pricey ones I’ve been eyeing up on ASOS!
